On Friday, the American Association of Wine Economists shared a list of the top 30 wine brands in the U.S. in 2019. This information was based on each brand’s market share by volume, and announced via Twitter.

As the brands were judged by quantity not quality, some may be surprised to see which brands landed the top spots on the list. In second place was college favorite Franzia, which boasts a 6.1 percent share of the entire U.S. wine market. Similarly, Barefoot secured the top spot with a 6.7 percent market share.

With these results, Franzia and Barefoot were able to account for nearly 13 percent of the entire U.S. wine market, leaving some to wonder just how many people were really “slapping the bag” in 2019.

More notably, no brand below the top two contenders broke three percent. Barefoot and Franzia each account for over double the market share held by the third place brand, Carlo Rossi, and over ten times as much as Riunite which rounded out the top 30.

With nine of the top 15 wineries on the list, E & J Gallo Winery was the real winner.
